Dichtung / Poetry

Wow, da hab ich ja echt lange nichts mehr geschrieben… Naja, entweder arbeiten oder Uni und danach ist man in der Regel echt fertig.

Ich habe dieses Semester zwei Kurse über Dichtung – einmal Romantische und Viktorianische Dichtung und einmal über Sprechsituationen in der Lyrik allgemein – und ich bin wirklich zufrieden damit.
Ich hab in den letzte Wochen und Monaten wirklich einige Größen kennengelernt, besonders der Romantik – ach ja, kann mir jemand eine gute Biographie über Percy Bysshe Shelley empfehlen?
Nächste Woche sind dann Rossetti und Arnolds dran, wir nähern uns dann also der Viktorianischen Dichtung – dafür kommt dann auch endlich Oscar Wilde dran.
Zwei Lesetipps: Unbedingt „Das Gespenst von Canterville“ und „Ernst muss man sein“ lesen!!! Das erste Buch ist ein Klassiker und das Theaterstück ist wie Mario Barth – nur eben viel früher.

Tut mir Leid, dass es so kurz ist… Aber wie gesagt, die Woche war ziemlich anstrengend.

Wow, that was a long pause.. Well, either had to work or went to university, and then I am usually really finished in the evenings.

This semester, I have two courses about poetry – one about Romantic and Victorian Poetry and one about Speech Situations in Lyrik – and I enjoy it, really.
I have got to know a lot of the „Great Poets“ during the last weeks and months, especially in Romantic Poetry – by the way, could anyone hellp me with a good biography about Percy Bysshe Shelley?
Next week, we’re doing Rossetti and Arnolds, so we’re getting to Victorian Poetry – but then, we’ll finally dealing with Oscar Wilde.
Two hints for reading: „The Canterville Ghost“ and „The Importanced of being Ernest“ are a must! The first book is a classic and the play is like Mario Barth [a German Comedian who does a lot about relationships between men and women, he's quite successful here], only much earlier.

„Gute Literatur“ – „Good Literature“

Letztes Jahr sagte eine meiner Professoren, gute Literatur sei – unter anderem – Literatur, die man immer wieder gewinnbringend lesen könne.
Dieser Satz ist mir vor ein paar Tagen wieder eingefallen und ich habe daraufhin eine kleine Liste im Kopf erstellt, was ich so alles mehrmals gelesen habe und was dann für mich gute Literatur sei.

• Die Medicus-Trilogie von Noah Gordon
• Harry Potter (mindestens die Bände 1-3)
• Bücher von Michael Ende, Otfried Preußler und James Krüss
• „Unterm Rad“ von Hermann Hesse
• „Angela’s Ashes“ von Frank McCourt
• „Hartmut und ich“ von Oliver Uschmann
• „Sieben Katzen und die Kunst des Lebens“ von Jo Coudert
• Diverse Comics (z.B. Asterix, Garfield, Snoopy)
• einige Gedichte von Goethe und Schiller
• „Das Boot“ von Günther Buchheim
• einige Stücke von Shakespeare
• Charles Dickens’ „Oliver Twist“
• „Das Gespenst von Canterville“ von Oscar Wilde
• „Die Meute der Mórrigan“ von Pat O’Shea
• „Lycidas“ von Christoph Marzi
• „Unten am Fluss“ von Richard Adams
  

Die Liste lässt sich jetzt natürlich beliebig fortführen und ich muss gestehen, dass ich auch noch nicht alle deutschen und englischen „Klassiker“ gelesen habe – aber ich arbeite daran (siehe den Eintrag zum „Glasperlenspiel“ von Hesse).
Ich glaube, ich werde in nächster Zeit mal ein bisschen herumsuchen und für mich klarmachen, WARUM ich diese Bücher schon zigmal gelesen habe, was ihren Reiz ausmacht und ob das wirklich für gute Literatur entscheidend ist…. Könnte spannend werden.

Last year, one of my professors said that good literatur was (among other criteria) literatur you could read again and again and gaining something from it.
A few years ago, this sentence dropped into my mind again and therefore I made a little list of books in my mind which I have read several times by now and which would then be ‘good literature’ for me.

• The Physician Trilogy by Noah Gordon
• Harry Potter (at least the books 1-3)
• Books written by Michael Ende, Otfried Preußler and James Krüß
• “Beneath the Weel” by Hermann Hesse
• „Angela’s Ashes“ by Frank McCourt
• „Hartmut and I“ by Oliver Uschmann
• „Seven Cats and the Art of Living“ by Jo Coudert
• several Comics (e.g. Asterix, Garfield, Snoopy)
• Some poems which were written by Goethe and Schiller
• „The Boat“ by Günther Buchheim
• some pieces of Shakespeare
• „Oliver Twist“ by Charles Dickens
• „The Canterville Ghost“ by Oscar Wilde
• „The Hounds of the Morrigan“ by Pat O’Shea
• „Lycidas“ by Christoph Marzi
• „Watership Down“ by Richard Adams

Of course I could go on and on with the list and I must admit that I haven’t read all German and English “Classics” yet – but I’m working on that (see the posting according “The Glas Bead Game” by Hermann Hesse).
I think I am really going to search around a bit and think about WHY I read these books several times, what is their charme and if that makes them good literature…. Might be interesting.

FanFiction II & Hermann Hesse

So… endlich mal wieder ein Eintrag.
Ich bin immernoch dabei, das Forum durchzulesen – und das dauert bei 165 Seiten halt ein bisschen.
Bin deshalb die letzten Tage auch ziemlich spät (besser gesagt, früh) ins Bett gegangen und werde das diese Woche bereuen, wenn’s wieder losgeht.

Nebenbei habe ich vor ein paar Tagen angefangen, Hermann Hesses „Glasperlenspiel“ zu lesen.
Bis jetzt ist es ein richtig gutes Buch und ich mag’s total gerne – es ist glaube ich sein letztes gewesen und er hat den Nobelpreis in Literatur dafür bekommen.
Zum Inhalt kann ich noch nicht viel sagen (bin noch nicht soweit) – aber ich liebe es, wenn man sich ganz viele Sätze rausschreiben und an die Wand pinnen könnte, wie „wir wollen dabei nicht vergessen, dass es leicht und töricht ist, über Irrtümer und Unsitten ferner Zeiten die Nase zu rümpfen“.
Das sollte man sich doch wirklich zu Herzen nehmen, oder?

Alright… another posting at last.
I’m still reading through this bulletin board – and it takes some time with its 165 pages.
Went to bed very late (or rather early) the last days because of this – and I will regret this when it’s „here we go again“ this week.
By the way, I startet to read Hermann Hesse’s „The Glas Bead Game“.
Until now, it’s really good and I like it very much – I think it was his last book and won him a Nobel Literature Prize.
I cannot say too much about the story by now (I haven’t read that much yet) – but I simply love it when you could write down so many sentences and hang them on your wall, like „we do no want to forget that it is easy and foolish to look down our noses at errors and bad habits of former times.“
That’s something worth takeing to heart, isn’t it?

Fanfiction

Es gibt einige Dinge, die darf ich nicht in die Finger kriegen. Dazu gehören unter anderem Schokoladeneis, Salzstangen, Gummibärchen und Foren mit Fanfiction.
Gestern habe ich so eins gefunden beim Browsen auf youtube (zumindest das Video zur Story). Und naja – ich habe dann auch bis ca. 04:00 Uhr gelesen.
FanFiction hat etwas unheimlich faszinierendes. Vielleicht weil man noch mehr als bei Büchern ganz nah am Autor dran ist, denn FF ist ja zum größten Teil sehr persönlich oder sagt zumindest sehr viel mehr über den Autor/die Autorin aus als Romane.
Gestern also das Forum. Die Stories, die ich gestern Nacht gelesen habe, bezogen sich alle auf die Bundesliga und die deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft. Was mich überrascht hat, ist, dass sich (obwohl anscheinend auch viele Frauen zu schreiben scheinen) so viele Gaystories unter den Geschichten befinden. Versteht mich nicht falsch, ich habe kein Problem damit, aber seltsam fand ich es doch. Warum?
Bei Männern kann ich das noch verstehen, wenn ich lesbisch wäre, würde ich auch lesbische FF schreiben, völlig klar. Aber warum die Frauen? Ist das eine, ich sage mal, … ja, wie soll ich sagen? So nach dem Motto: „Ich find das ja so süß, dass die sich so gut verstehen, und wenn die sich in den Arm nehmen… Das wär’ doch total schön, wenn da mehr wäre.“ (wie gesagt: ich weiß es nicht. Ich weiß nur, dass ICH, wenn ich eine FF schriebe, „mein“ Fußballstar garantiert nicht schwul wäre, schließlich bin ich es auch nicht ).
Naja, wie dem auch sei… Man kann durch die Bank weg sehen (jedenfalls bei den Geschichten, die ich gelesen habe), dass sich die Leute wirklich Mühe gegeben haben.
Und wie gesagt: Das finde ich so faszinierend. Ich meine, ich spinne mir auch jeden Tag kiloweise Zeug zusammen, aber sich dann auch noch die Arbeit zu machen, das aufzuschreiben, meistens noch Korrektur lesen zu lassen und das dann für andere ins Netz zu stellen – da ziehe ich meinen Hut vor.

There are some things I must not lay may hands on, for example chocolate ice cream, pretzel sticks, gummi bears and bulletin boards with Fanfiction. I found one of them yesterday while browsing on youtube (that is, the video of the story). And, well – I read until 4 o’clock in the morning.
Fanfiction is something incredible fascinating. Maybe because you are even closer to the authors than you are in novels, for FF is most of the time very personal or tells you at least more about the writer than in other books.
Well, yesterday was the bulletin board. The stories I read last night where all concerned with the German Football League and the national team of Germany. What surprised me is that (although there seem to be also a lot of women amongst the authors) there are so many stories which are gaystories. Please don’t get me wrong here, I don’t have a problem with that, but, nevertheless, I thound it was strange. Why?
I can understand it when there are men writing the stories, if I was lesbian, I would write lesbian FF, of course. But why the women? I mean… well, I don’t quite know how to put his.. Like: “I think it’s so sweet they like each other so much and that they hug each other when one of them shot a goal… Wouldn’t it be nice if there was more to it?” (it’s like I said: I don’t know. The only thing I know is that if I was writing FF, “my” football star wouldn’t be gay, for I’m not. )
Be that as it may… You can see throughout the stories (as far as I read them) that these people really had put much effort in them. That’s what I think is so fascinating. I mean, daydream so much stuff in a day, but then to get down to work, to write all this down, most of the time having it proofread and then put it online for others… I take my hat off for them.

Krimitag mit Donna Leon und Minck&Minck

Irgendwie kam ich heute gar nicht dazu, so viel zu lesen, dabei hatte ich den ganzen Tag frei.
Sehr seltsam… Naja, egal.

Während des Essens dann jeweils gelesen. Ich glaube, ich bin die einzige Person, die sogar während des Essens liest. Vorzugsweise Bücher, in denen es gerade ums Essen geht. Es schmeckt dann irgendwie besser.
Heute war’s jedenfalls Donna Leon – ich liebe die Stellen, an denen Commissario Brunetti zu Hause ist, eigentlich mehr als die Krimis an sich, obwohl auch die wirklich gut sind. Das wäre tatsächlich ein Buch, dass es sich lohnen würde, auf Italienisch zu lesen. Die ganze Krimireihe lohnt sich übrigens.
Zum Einen, weil der Schauplatz der Geschichten – Venedig – einfach unglaublich schön ist (ich wünschte, ich hätte das Geld, hinzufahren!), zum Anderen, weil die Charaktere grundsätzlich gut gezeichnet werden und die Krimis nicht vorhersehbar sind. Ich hasse es, wenn man schon nach der Hälfte des Buches weiß, wer’s war…
Wer die Verfilmungen sehen möchte – unbedingt die alten mit Joachim Król gucken! Genauso hatte ich mir Brunetti vorgestellt… Perfekt.
Dann abends im Minck&Minck weitergelesen, mit Philipp. Ein Ruhrpottkrimi, spielt in meiner Heimatstadt und ist einfach nur klasse und manchmal sogar sehr lustig. Wir lesen gerade den ersten Band, „totgepflegt“ – und das Buch ist, wie gesagt, nicht einfach nur gut geschrieben, sondern noch zusätzlich viel „bildlicher“ als jeder Fernsehfilm, weil ich die Stadt so genau kenne. Es geht um Magret („Maggie“) Abendroth, die ihren Job als Drehbuchautorin in Köln verliert und dann in Bochum bei einem Bestatter anfangen muss. Aber irgendwas stimmt nicht, denn auf einmal sterben ziemlich viele alte Leute auf die gleiche Weise… Lest es am besten einfach selbst und überzeugt euch davon.

Crime day with Donna Leon and Minck&Minck
Somehow I didn’t get the chance to do read as much as I liked to, although I had the whole day off.
Very strange… Well, never mind.
Read during my meals. I think, I am the only person who reads even while eating. Especially books in which people eat something or in which some really great meals are described. Food tastes better then somehow – strange, isn’t it?
Well, today it was Donna Leon – I love it when Commissario Brunetti is at home, actually I prefer these scenes to the detective story itself, although the detective plots are very good, too. That really would be a book worth reading in Italian. By the way – all her books are worth reading! For one thing, because the setting of the novels – Venice – is simply marvellous (I wish I had the money to go there on a holiday!), for another, because the characters are, as a matter of principle, well done and the stories are not predictable. I hate it when you already know who ‘did it’ after having read only half of the novel…
If you want to watch the movies – watch the old ones, with Joachim Król as Brunetti! He looks exactly like „my“ Brunetti… Perfect.
Then read on in the book of Minck&Minck together with Philipp. A detective novel in the Ruhrgebiet (that’s in North Rhine-Westphalia), set in my hometown and it is just great, sometimes it is even very funny. We are reading the first book „totgepflegt“ (you cannot really translate this, because it’s slang – maybe you could say „Cared to Death“, but I don’t know how good this is) – and as I said before, it is not only very well-written, but more „visible“ for me than any movie shown on TV, because I know the city so exactly.
The book is about Margret „Maggie“ Abendroth who loses her job as a screenwriter in Cologne and then has to start working at an undertaker’s in Bochum. But somehow, there are too many old people dying the same way…
Just read it for yourself and let me know what you think.

Dieses Zitat stammt aus dem Gedichtzyklus „Astrophel and Stella“ des englischen Dichters Sir Philip Sidney und – naja, ich dachte, es beschreibt genau das, was ich die meiste Zeit tue, auch wenn man mein Hirn nun tatsächlich nicht sun-burned nennen kann.
Ich weiß nicht mehr, der wievielte Blog das hier ist, aber ich dachte, ich mache zur Abwechslung mal etwas, von dem ich Ahnung habe – Bücher.
Ich werdet hier also lesen können, was ich gerade lese – und wie gut oder schlecht ich es finde.

This citation was taken from „Astrophel and Stella“, a cycle of poems written by the English poet Sir Philip Sidney and – well, I thought it would describe exactly what I am doing most of the time – even when you cannot possibly call my brain ’sun-burned’. I don’t know how much blogs I have tried to write before, but I thought I’d do something I am good at for a change – books.
